Sanitation Stickers - 2010
Sanitation stickers are now on sale at the Town Hall, weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.  All residences in West Wyoming must purchase a sticker. The cost remains the same as last year, $200.00.  If purchased before January 31, 2010, senior citizens (65 and older) will receive a $25.00 rebate ($175.00), all others receive a $15.00 rebate ($185.00). If purchased from February 1-28, 2010, the full price will be charged, $200.00.  After February 28, 2010, the cost will be $300.00 for the year and citations will be filed with the District Magistrate for noncompliance with the Ordinance. This fee allows residents a weekly three container collection, weekly recycling, and the curbside yard waste composting and leaf program. There will be no bulk item pickup this year.  Stickers are also available through the mail: West Wyoming Borough Building, 464 West 8th Street, P.O. Box 4035, 464 West 8th Street, West Wyoming PA 18644. For the added convenience of residents, Visa, MasterCard and Mac are accepted.

West Wyoming Borough Awarded $241,114 Grant from PA Conservation Works Program
State Rep. Phyllis Mundy, D-Kingston, announced that West Wyoming Borough will be awarded $241,114 in funding through the PA Conservation Works Grant program. The program, made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program, assists local governments and nonprofits in funding renewable energy efficiency projects that result in a minimum of 25 percent savings of all energy used. Under the program, grants of up to $250,000 are available for eligible renewable energy conservation projects. All projects must be completed within 18 months and prior to Sept. 30, 2011.

Shade Tree Commission Plants 43 Trees in Borough

The West Wyoming Shade Tree Commission members along with borough Mayor Joe Herbert and Council Member Eileen Cipriani completed a planting of 43 trees last week. The Wyoming Area Environmental Clubs, under the instruction of Damien Rutkoski once again assisted in tree planting. Certified Arborist and Shade Tree Commission member Mary Pat Apple instructed the students and adult volunteers in proper planting techniques and tree care information. The trees were received through a grant from the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority (LHVA). The Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority has supported this project in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the National Park Service. Please note, this is the first of two planting projects in the borough. If you requested a tree and it is not planted this week, it will be completed in the second project.

5th St. Manor Block Party
Friends and families of 5th Street Manor in West Wyoming held their annual block party over the Labor Day weekend. Food, fun and festivities were enjoyed throughout the day. Around 100 people attended the annual event. Block Party
Shirley Malloy Golf Tournament/Clambake a Success

The Shirley Malloy Golf Tournament/ Clambake outing was held on September 26 at Applewood golf course. The very successful event raised over $7000 for playground equipment to be installed in Charney park in Shirley's honor. The Malloy Family and the committee members would sincerely like to thanks all those who donated and attended this worthwhile event. 9/11 National Remembrance Flag to be Flown at Town Hall

The West Wyoming Borough Council voted to fly a "9/11 National Remembrance Flag" below the American flag in front of the town hall. The flag, donated by borough resident Louis Bigiarelli, was created to honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The 9/11 National Remembrance Flag features four stars - each representing the sites where the tragedy occurred that day.

"We should never forget what happened on September 11, "Bigiarrelli said. "I don't think this deal is over yet." (Times Leader)

WWHS Graduates Meet in Florida - John Randazzo, Class of 65, recently returned from Florida after visting his sister, Shirley Randazzo VanTassel, Class of 57, in Port Orange. While there, he and his sister took a trip to Ellenton to visit the Robbins’ brothers, Duane and his wife Betty Jane (Lacina), Class of 51 and Harry (Doc, Class of 58 and his wife Joan (Rakos), Class of 59.   Duane and Betty Jane were also visited by Marion (Amato) and Ed Heck during the month of February.  Leda (Franconi) and Len Motzki were also vacationing in Florida and stopped to visit Duane and Betty Jane. 

Also vacationing in Florida during this past month were  Joan (Barbacci) Brunges and her sister, Marie Voitek, Carol (Hodakowski) and her husband Joe Martinsky, Margie (Osborne) Glass and her husband, Len and Judy Grescavage, Rose Marie (Damico) White,  Sherry (Marchesini) Huth and Eleanor (Kutyna) Kuzma. Stanley Sipko Jr Named New West Wyoming Police Chief

CAMILLE FIOTI Times Leader Correspondent – It was standing room only at Monday’s council meeting as assistant Stanley Sipko Jr. was sworn in as the borough’s new chief of police. Sipko, who began his employment with the borough’s department as a part-time officer in 1992, rose through the ranks to a full-time patrolman, sergeant and assistant chief. Sipko’s appointment follows the Dec. 31 retirement of former Chief Dave Gashi, who began his career with the police department as a part-time officer in 1972. “I congratulate Chief Gashi for his service and dedication and extend my sincere wish for good health and much enjoyment in his well-earned retirement,” Mayor Joseph Herbert said.

Herbert assured residents the department “will continue to advance with the new technology requirements and training with Chief Sipko leading the way.”

He added, “I have complete confidence that Chief Sipko will maintain the highest standards of police professionalism for himself and the entire police department.”

Herbert recognized the following people in attendance: former Judge Ann Lokuta; District Judge Paul Roberts, of Kingston; County Sheriff Mike Savokinas; and Wyoming Area School Board members Dave Alberigi and John Marianacci.

With his parents, Stanley Sr. and Kathleen Sipko, looking on, Sipko thanked council and the residents for their support.

“Throughout the years, when I was just starting out here, I knew no one,” he said. “By looking out here, I made a lot of friends for life.”

In other business, council also voted to appoint Richard Yarosavich as council chairman and Joseph Granteed as vice chairman.

Holiday House Contest Winners Announced - The Recreation Board has announced the winning households in the annyal borough Christmas Decorating contest. the winners were the Ranieli family on Shoemaker Ave, the Kitchen family on Lee Ann Street and the Ostrowski family on Fourth St. All winners receive a West Wyoming Borough commemorative ornament and a gift certificate to Marianacci's Restaurant on Eighth St. in West Wyoming. Notes from December 8 Council Meeting (Times Leader)

  • Council awarded a certificate of appreciation to police Chief David Gashi, who will be retiring on Dec.31. Gashi, who wasn't present at the meeting, began his service with the borough as a part-time police officer in 1972.
  • Mayor Josephy Herbert said he would present Gashi with the certificate at a later date. Council voted to appoint assistant police chief Stanley Sipko to the position of acting police chief, effective Jan 1. Sipko will be sworn in as the official chief at the regular January meeting.
  • Council announced it would delay voting on the proposed 2009 budget until the end of the month to allow time to review the borough's reassessment values. The date for a special meeting to vote on the proposed $877,624 spending plan will be announced in the near future, council said.

  • West Wyoming High Reunion: The first meeting to discuss plans for the 2nd All Class Reunion for West Wyoming graduates was held on October 8, 2008 at Marianacci’s Restaurant in West Wyoming.  Those in attendance included:  Jerry Pace, Marion Amato Heck, Joan Barbacci Brunges, Rosemarie Damico White, Rosemarie Amato Ranieli, Charlotte Jacobosky Grodis, Shirley Randazzo VanTassel, Jim Sweitzer, Dan Voitek, Bernie Turant, Beverly Cheskiewicz Fiascke, Frank Fosko, Bob Nardone, John Randazzo, Julie Marini. The following committees were formed:  Chairman, Shirley Randazzo VanTassel; Vice-Chairman, Frank Fosko; Setup/Cleanup Committee, John Randazzo, Lights/Music Committee, Frank Fosko and Bob Nardone; Beer Setup, Bernie Turant and Robert Pealer; Publicity, Frank Fosko.  Charlotte Jacobosky Grodis volunteered to bake the Italian Anise cookies.  Anne Voitek provided a menu for members to discuss. 

Graduates from the Classes of 1967 & 1968 who attended West Wyoming High School up to their junior and senior year are invited to attend this reunion.  Allen Marini and Dan Gadomski are in charge of obtaining information on these graduates.  The event will take place on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the West Wyoming Hose Company #1 on Shoemaker Avenue in West Wyoming.
